Marceau and Suzette

Sometimes when I write about a shoot, I find it hard to convey how much it means to me to do what I do. This is one of those times. Beautiful Marceau was diagnosed with a terminal illness, and this shoot was a last minute gift to his owners from a wonderful friend. Sometimes, when a pet is unwell, new people and experiences can be overwhelming, but sweet and beautiful Marceau just purred, posed, and even had a little play for the camera. His cheeky sister Suzette kept an eye on us at all times, and made sure I knew that she was queen of the household.

Marceau went over the Rainbow Bridge not long after the shoot, and I am forever grateful that I got to give his people these shots – thank you from the bottom of my heart.

“By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,

Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.

Where the friends of man and woman do run,

When their time on earth is over and done.

For here, between this world and the next,

Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.

On this golden land, they wait and they play,

Till the RainbowBridge they cross over one day.

No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,

For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.

Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,

Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.

They romp through the grass, without even a care,

Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.

All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,

Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.

For just at that instant, their eyes have met;

Together again, both person and pet.

So they run to each other, these friends from long past,

The time of their parting is over at last.

The sadness they felt while they were apart,

Has turned into joy once more in each heart.

They embrace with a love that will last forever,

And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together”

Millie the Tenterfield Terrier in Beautiful Castlemaine

Oh little Millie, how I fell in love with her! This sweet girl was rescued the day before she was due to be put to sleep eight years ago, and my goodness did she ever steal my heart. Her soulful eyes, the adoration she has for her humans, and her cheeky bark had me completely smitten. She’s quite clearly in charge of the household and has her humans wrapped around her paw.

Millie is a Tenterfield Terrier, a breed that I hadn’t heard of previously. They have the cheekiness and energy of Fox Terriers, the ears, swishy tail and huge eyes of a Chihuahua, and the  elegant lean hindquarters of a Whippet. Millie is also a big daddy’s girl, and barely left his side the whole time I was there – it was a very special bond and one that really moved me.

Millie lives in Castlemaine with her humans Ken and Chris, who own an award winning B&B. They were kind enough to put me up there the night before the shoot and I can tell you I’ve never stayed anywhere quite so cosy and relaxing. If you’re ever up that way you must check it out – if for no other reason than the gorgeous double spa bath!

A Language Without Words

“How it is that animals understand things I do not know, but it is certain that they do understand. Perhaps there is a language which is not made of words and everything in the world understands it. Perhaps there is a soul hidden in everything and it can always speak, without even making a sound, to another soul.”
